First Friends is a social skills development program for children ages 3 to 6 who would benefit from additional support and understanding in the area of their social development.
First Friends meets at LDS on Mondays and Thursdays from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. for eight weeks. The next session will begin on Monday, April 24, 2017 and end on June 19 with a break for Memorial Day.
Some of the areas of focus for First Friends include helping those who are shy or nervous around teachers and/or peers; developing flexibility in social interactions, including playing cooperatively and sharing; supporting the development of communication needs; and recognizing and respecting boundaries, personal space and the feelings of others.
In addition to the group sessions, First Friends teachers maintain regular contact with parents to share their emerging understanding of each child’s experience in a group setting. An optional observation in the child’s school or daycare is available free of charge.
